Try as he might, it was actually quite hard to hide these things from River. She raised a single eyebrow, but didn't speak to the fact that he'd so quickly clasped his hands together. "Well sweetie, it's adventure time." River stepped forward, toward the castle. "Let's be off." With her steps filled with girlish anticipation, the bouncy-haired woman walked toward the castle. The Doctor would follow, of course. He seemed quite happy to have her around, so much as he pretended otherwise. And if she ran off and caused trouble, then where would he be? No, no, River thought, feeling the papery touch of grass on her legs, he'd be a good boy this time.
River stopped before the large structure, glancing left and right. Such lovely stonework. This was a beautiful monument even when old, and here, during its time of use, it was a masterpiece. "You see those markings on the top?" River called back to the Doctor. "They're not like anything I've seen before. I want to get a closer look, once we find a staircase." She turned back and eyed his sonic screwdriver. It really would be nice to get one of those... so useful. And pretty to-boot. One of these days, he'd be convinced, surely. River turned back to the door, with its large, iron rings instead of doorknobs. The earlier centuries were so much more creative with their doors. With a smile, River flung it open. Ahh. This was going to be fun.
The Doctor followed River, reflecting her excitement with his own adventurous nature. Though he'd have to keep an eye on her, make sure she behaved. But he was sure there'd be no need to worry. Then he looked up at the markings when she mentioned them; they did look slightly out of place. Oh well. Briefly checking his hand to check there were no more marks, and looking behind him to ensure nothing was there, he followed River inside.
Inside, the castle hall was empty, but there was a roaring fire at the end. A richly embroidered carpet went up the middle, with two long benches on either side. Seats were pulled up at them, and there were silver platters with food on the table. The Doctor bent down and sniffed one with a roast chicken. "Freshly cooked," he announced. "Only placed on the table a few minutes ago, I'd say. This is obviously laid out for some sort of feast...but where is everyone?"
"Silly Doctor." River bounded toward the feast. "You could have just pretended you did this. Think of all the brownie points you missed out on! Too truthful for your own good, but only at the wrong times."
River looked into the fire, blazing bright. A little dance of destruction stood before them, yellow, and red, and all at once terrifying. But it was contained. River turned on her heel, and faced the Doctor once more. "The carpet's quite in place, you know." She motioned at the floor. "The iconography is perfect for the time. Religious images, in the flowers. See how they bend in a cross shape?" River nodded. "And so bright too. But not so with the cookware. It's not synchronized with the time at all. Silver platters of Dutch make, from what I can tell." She lifted a single spoon into the air, and used it to look behind her into the fire. But wait. Did she see something else...?
River set it down quickly and turned around, hand upon the pouch where her gun lay. But as she turned, River suddenly forgot what she'd been searching for. "That was... strange." With a shrug of the shoulders, she turned back to the Doctor. "Not a clue where everyone might be, but something's up in this place. Are you sure you came here just for sightseeing, my dear husband?" She shot him a quizzical glance, chuckling. That would be so like him, to try and find something out, even on a holiday. Not that she'd expected anything different. With a flick of her wrist, River motioned to a nearby hallway. "Shall we take a look?"
Rolling his eyes in response, the Doctor just scanned around the room while River listed off everything she saw. She was completely right though. None of this fitted together, and he 'mmhmm-ed' in agreement with her. Then her question caught his attention. "What?" he asked. "No, I didn't take you here just to investigate this. I actually wanted a nice peacful outing for once. I had no idea what was happening here...still, I suppose we'd find out. And I suggest we start with those markings you noticed earlier." As he looked at her, she looked shaken by something, but he didn't ask. He saw the hallway she indicated and stood up beside her. "We shall," he answered, holding his elbow out to her.
River took the Doctor's arm in her own, smiling slightly. The bounded off down the hallway in happy junction, River looking left and right at each of the doors. She needed to not talk to herself quite so much, when the facts were obviously going over the Doctor's head. Dark, mahogany doors surrounded them, each carved with medieval scrollery. River couldn't help but be impressed with the images around her, even if some--most--were obviously out of place. "Ooh, what's that?" River raised a hand to run it through her hair, and looked at the end of the hallway. There was a golden suit of armor at the back wall, shining brightly. She thought for just a moment that it might have moved. But that had to be wrong, there wasn't a soul in this whole place.
"Doctor," She prodded her husband lightly, "I think you might want to make use of your sonic on the fellow over there."
When the Doctor saw the suit of armour she was talking about, he brought them to a halt. "I think you might be right," he said to her. Taking his arm away from her, he took the sonic back out of his pocket and walked slowly towards the suit. "Hello?" he asked as he got closer. "Sorry to bother you. We just thought we'd popped in. Any chance you could tell us where everyone is?" He got closer until he was standing right in front of the suit, and he lifted his empty hand to take off the helmet.
As the Doctor lifted off its helmet, the golden suit of armor stood stock still. Not a thing in the room stirred as it slowly became unhooked from the main body, not even when the Doctor held it completely separated in the air above the suit. Then, the vacant suit twitched slightly. "Ooh." Came words from River's mouth, walking closer. She'd seen this coming, in a way, but you could never be too sure. The suit stood still otherwise, but seemed to have moved on its own. She reached out her hand to touch it, but before grazing the surface of the metal, pulled back. What was this thing before her? "Doctor, when you scanned it, what did you see?" River whispered, looking quite seriously at the headless suit. It twitched again, still with only the slightest movements. Was it alive? She was still unsure.
The Doctor scanned over the suit with the sonic and looked at it. "No...how does that work?" He peered at the suit. "It's mechanical," he said in answer to River's question. "Like a primitive, robotic mechanical device...but this is too advanced for it's time." He held his ear to the chest part of the armour and lightly knocked on it.
"Well, it's not the first time we've seen this." River crossed her arms. "There's plenty of suits and robots everywhere with you, all non-synchronic with their times. It might have been placed here by another." She was really just throwing out ideas at this point. It was a bit hard to be surprised by robots out of place in time after doing this time travel shtick for so long. She took a step even closer, and peered down the empty suit. Normal. Entirely normal. If it was just your run of the mill robot, all the inner workings were entirely contained. River stepped back a bit, and looked down at the Doctor. "Well? Hear anything?"
River couldn't help but be reminded of another suit. The space suit. When she'd worn it, she thought she'd killed this crazy old man. But no, he couldn't be done in so easily. As she stared into the cold, golden metal reflection, those moments of terror flew back through her mind. She'd begun to remember snippets, here and there. But what if... perish the thought, but what if the Silence had put this suit here, too? No, she wouldn't speak it. Better not to worry the Doctor on a holiday. He'd figure out the true enemy here soon enough.
"Just the normal sounds of an internal drive," the Doctor said. "It's working perfectly, apart from a glitch in the legs. That might explain why it's not wandering about the place." He stepped back from the suit. "Still, it might be best to keep it that way. Come on, let's keep looking around, we'll get back to it." Walking back over to River, he took his hand in hers and gently pulled her along with him. He looked into her eyes and it was obvious that something was bothering her. "You okay?" he asked, concerned. Hopefully she hadn't seen any Silents, if they even were here, he couldn't be sure. Seeing them again might make her uneasy, after them forcing her to kill him. Well, they thought she killed him anyway.
River looked up at the doctor, both eyebrows raising. "Me? Oh, I'm fine. Just thinking." Oh, she was thinking. Thinking about how she disliked suits of any kind now. But it couldn't be helped. There had to be something else here that would tell them what was going on, because something was certainly going on. This castle was strange. "Let's find something quickly, hm?" River looked down the hall as they continued walking, looking over the stone walls as they rounded the corner together. Was that a cold draft coming from the distance beyond? And voices, River was nearly sure she heard voices. And not just in her head, either.
River looked back to the Doctor with a smile, putting images of the Silence out of her head. An adventure with her Doctor? How could she resist. It wasn't a normal holiday, but she shouldn't complain. Then walked together in slow gait toward the direction of the voices, River quite sure that this would explain at least a little of what was going on. "Maybe they'll invite us to the party." She quipped.
The Doctor was as curious as River as they headed towards the source of the voices. "Hopefully it's one we want to be invited to," he said to her. He rounded the corner and addressed the people talking there. "Hello! Sorry, me and my friend, well, wife here have got a bit lost, and we're wondering what's going on here." He hoped that these people were friendly, and wouldn't try to kill them on sight for no reason. Those were the worst kind of social skills.
"Hmph." River crossed her arms in annoyance again. Friend? She became a bit happier when he fixed his sentence, calling her wife, but the nerve of it. He'd learn eventually. Lips pursed even now, River looked toward the group. Women, many women, were leaned over many plates and and platters of food, placing them on a boring, brown table. This was obviously the place where the maids were putting down the food before serving it, rather than the placesetting itself. That, she and the Doctor had seen earlier. Like so many bees, they all busily ran about. One by one, the women looked up, setting down their work to stare at the Doctor and her. They seemed quite unnerved. "Well, don't they seem taken with you." The Doctor's wife smiled, looking the women over. This wasn't a normal level of nervousness. "Hello dears, might one of you tell us who's in charge here? My husband and I would like to find ourselves. Being lost isn't so much fun."
But, no words came from the women. They continued shaking in their burlap dresses, bowing their heads every now and then. Certainly, it was nice to be royalty at this time, having vassals who were so ready to serve. But it made for very hard interrogations. "Right then. They're too busy being afraid that their husbands will be beheaded to be of much use to us. Want to move on?" River whispered to the Doctor, glancing over the roast lamb that had just been set out as she did so.
"Hang on," the Doctor stopped River. "This isn't right. There's something other than fear for their husbands." He went over to one of the women and bent down to look her in the eye. "Hello. I'm the Doctor," he said. "What's going on here? Because it looks like one of you should know something. Any tiny little detail, can you tell me? Hm?"
The girl, for she wasn't quite a woman, trembled. Her eyes shot away, and she stared at the nearby wall. Something was very wrong, River could tell. The Doctor was right, and for once it wasn't annoying. "Come on dear, you must say something." But no, the girl acted unable to speak. She shivered a bit, and wrung her hands. It was all very odd, and the other girls seemed to act similarly. Finally, the brown-eyed girl spoke up. "W-we are not to speak to strangers here..." The girl shook again, her eyes darting to the Doctor, and settling upon River. "You aren't... friends of the master of the house, are you? I'm not supposed to talk. I'm not." She covered her mouth, wide-eyed once more. River turned to look at the Doctor. She shrugged, and shook her head.
