"The marks are how many Silents I've seen, helps to keep me reminded what's after me," the Doctor explained. "But where are they, and what are they doing..." Next instant, River was facing away from him. What had happened? Then she mentioned his hand. He looked at it. "Oh, I'm good," he said. "Let's see what little old me's left for us..." He pressed the light on his hand.
His recorded voice spoke from the tiny machine. "Castle basement."
The Doctor frowned. "What? That's it? I thought I would've told myself something more specific than that..."
"Basement?" River replied, eyebrow raised. "I suppose we better go find it. Do castles have basements? I thought those were dungeons."
What a bother. He really should have been more talkative, or specific. River was beginning to feel like she was on some wild goose chase--and if she was, she wanted more answers as to why they were chasing this Silence-goose. They were going to do something terrible surely. All the monsters after the Doctor did something terrible. But somehow, it seemed like he was worried for River herself, and not for his own life and limb. A bit odd to think about, wasn't it? If anyone, they'd be after the Doctor, not her.
Walking toward the TARDIS, River turned around. "Well, it'd be quicker if I just drive us down there. Or are you going to be stubborn and drive yourself?"
The Doctor sighed. "Oh, if you really want to drive, fine. Just this one short ride." He got into the TARDIS with her and started thinking. He knew that castles had dungeons instead of basements, so why did he say to himself 'basement'? Unless he said it when he was panicking while facing the Silence. But he hardly ever panicked, so that was unlikely. Why did he say basement?
River entered, and flounced her way over to the controls. With the precision of an airline pilot, she flipped knobs this way and that, pushing buttons now and again, until they were on course. "Right then." She nodded, then looked toward the Doctor. "I searched for something called 'The castle basement,' and it came right up. We should be there in a minute or so.
As a gentle whirring began in the belly of the TARDIS, River looked around. Something felt odd and uncertain. What did basement mean, if not dungeon? But then, this was barely a castle. It was a changing thing, likely controlled by an outside force. She hadn't seen anything exactly like this before, at least not on this scale, so knowing what they were up against was difficult. But there was the sound of landing, and River put her hands back on the controls to make sure they placed down safely. When finished, she walked past the Doctor to the door.
"Well, here we are. Let's see what excitement awaits us in the basement."
"You just searched..." The Doctor shook his head. River Song never failed to amaze him. But how could there actually be a place called 'castle basement'? Oh well, they were there, and that's what they wanted, he supposed. He followed River out of the TARDIS and into...well, he couldn't see anything in the darkness. It was pitch-black. "Typical," he muttered. "Hang on..." He took a torch out of his pocket and turned it on. Pointing it in front of him...
River's hand slowly drew into her purse, grabbing for the gun. This wasn't good, no, not one bit. Had he flung them into a trap, somehow? Had someone else used his voice and saved a message for them, somehow? Whatever was going on, they were going into quite the intense danger zone.
Her first thought was that they should turn around a hightail it for the TARDIS, lock it, and get away. But that wouldn't do, not now. She couldn't let on that the TARDIS was here, what if these... whatever they were, got ahold of it? She couldn't let the poor old thing fall into their hands. The gun was ready to fire now, whenever she needed it. They were still as stone next to one another, staring into the enormous face of one of the Silence, with its voice like a prodded hornet's nest, curdling the air around them with fear. Not wanting to change the tone of the moment, as it was not yet attacking, River merely cleared her throat and nodded in its direction, hoping that the Doctor had some idea on how to deal with this. She would have just shot it from the get-go, but there was no way to tell how many were in there, and he always wanted the deathless route. So much more work.
The first thing the Doctor did in face of the grey spectre was gulp. Then he looked to River. He saw her hand inside her bag, meaning she had a hold on her gun. At least she hadn't just shot the thing on the spot. That could stop them from learning what was going on here. He looked back to the Silent and managed a smile. "Well, hello again," he said. "I've probably said that loads of times today already. But I'm not in the mood for chatter, so why don't you tell us what's going on here?"
The Silent just continued to look at them, silent. The Doctor's expression became more urgent, as he looked to River and shrugged.
"Doctor!" River hissed at him through clenched teeth. "What are you doing?"
He was standing there and talking to it. River kept her eyes glued to that creature of course. But he had to have a plan--well, that was a lie. He didn't have to, but she strongly hoped that he did. If it was up to River, she'd shoot it in the head, and the oncoming group of them, but that could be foolish. Though, it was quicker. It was hard to say which was the best choice, so for now, she shuffled in place and tried to be patient. Time was so slow when you had to be patient. This is why she usually took shortcuts. Through time, space, gardens with flowers while riding a bus... Yes, River liked the quickest possible route.
"Come on then, show yourselves already. Or is it just the one?"
"Now, River, don't tempt them," the Doctor warned her. But even as he said it, the darkness briefly flickered to light, then back to dark, apart from that one Silent. It kept flicking, until, eventually, the lights decided to stay on. But the Doctor didn't thank them for that. For now they'd discovered that there was a crowd of Silents. The room was filled with them, and they were all spaced out. But none of them caught his eye. It was the human in the centre, with wild, curly blond hair that ironically always reminded him of River's. The black leather uniform, and the eyepatch. "And of course you had to be here," he said, looking at her.
River shot the Doctor a questioning glance. Who was he looking at, like that? She knew of course, that he'd had plenty of other ladies before her... but to act like that around her? Rude. She looked toward the swirling patch of wayward hair, and realized she couldn't quite make out who that was. Someone important, no doubt. She had this odd feeling that she knew the person, maybe in some other thread of time, but for the life of her, she couldn't figure out just who it was. Maybe she'd see in time. But, there were always the quicker methods.
"Doctor, who's your friend?" River asked with an expectant tone to her voice. It was a tone of voice she found herself using more and more around this wandering time lord of a man. Couldn't be helped, though, as things that belonged to River, she wished to keep with her. And the Doctor was certainly one of her things.
As she waited for him to explain himself, she let a finger caress her gun, and she pulled it up slowly and carefully until the silvery back was just above the fabric of her purse. She might as well be ready for the ensuing "excitement."
