Physical Description: Zoe is a girl of small stature. At sixteen years old, she is only two inches above five feet. She’s very slender. Her dark brown is cut short, hanging just above her shoulders. It is kept back with a black headband. Her eyes are a wide, curious light brown that are framed by a thick set of eyelashes.
Her dress style tends to be more on the conservative side. When the Doctor and Jamie first met her on the Wheel, she was wearing the standard one-piece uniform of the personnel. In her encounter with the Dominators, in an effort to blend in with the Dulkins, she donned the typical female dress attire of the species. She expressed discomfort about how impractical the clothing was.
Despite what she may say, Zoe does like to dress up and she has a rather nice sense of style when she does put an effort into it. When she met Isobel and the woman wanted her to model, Zoe leapt at the chance.
Personality: The first impression that most get from Zoe is that she is a young lady tied completely up in numbers. The training at the parapsychology department tended to ignore the emotional and intuitive part of the students, often stunting the students’ abilities to fully develop their emotions. In the Wheel, Leo confronted Zoe about how she was only concerned with all facts and calculations; accusing her of not caring what happened to the crew should the meteorites hit the ship.
Later, she admits that she doesn’t want to be just full of computations and numbers – she wants to feel things as well. The Doctor clearly changed her perspective on the value of intuition, by proving to her that pure logic never got anybody anywhere. As he told her when they first met, “logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority.” Intuition and logic needed to go hand in hand to provide brilliance, something she never considered until she met the Doctor.
She has a very curious mind, even to the point where she at first attempted to become a stowaway on the TARDIS in order to find out more about how the ship worked. When they materialized in the Land of Fiction, she immediately went outside the TARDIS without Jamie and the Doctor because they were being too slow. With that curiosity comes with a steadfast determination and stubbornness. Her tenacity can often come out as pride, such as when she blew up a robotic receptionist because she “won’t lose to a stupid tin box”.
Zoe is very confident in herself and in her abilities. She regularly excels anything that she puts her mind to, and, when there was doubt if the Doctor would be able to pass a test, she easily put those doubts to rest. “The Doctor,” she explained simply, “is nearly as clever as me.”
She often banters playfully with Jamie, often teasing him about his lower intelligence. However, all of her comments are made in jest. She views the Doctor and Jamie as very close friends and she’s very loyal to them. She likes to tease the Doctor as much as he teases her.
History: When the Doctor and Jamie first encountered Zoe, she was working as the Wheel’s librarian. She demonstrated amazing knowledge and an outstanding ability to solve problems internally. She instantly picked up on their deception by pointing out that they couldn’t have travelled eighty million miles in a ship that only had enough fuel for twenty million without having meant to. Having aided the Doctor and Jamie with the attempted Cybermen invasion of Earth, she hid in a box in the TARDIS. The Doctor discovered her fairly quickly and showed her images of his and Jamie’s previous encounter with the Daleks, warning her that travelling with him wouldn’t always be safe. Instead of scaring her off, however, this sparked even more curiosity and adventure into the young girl.
Their next adventure would take them to the planet Dulkis, where they would encounter the hostile Dominators. Zoe and Cully formed an alliance fairly quickly, plotting against the Dominators and Quarks together when they are taken as slaves. They would have been successful, too, had that meddling Jamie not startled Cully when he was about to shoot the Quarks. Later, Zoe was able to calculate where they should build the tunnel to capture the seed device based off the area where the Dominators were drilling.
Over the years, the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe would have many adventures. She was changing as a person and she eventually settled into her new life with them. It all changed when the Doctor’s past finally caught up with him – and although they had tried to escape, it was the end of their adventures together. Her memories were wiped and she was put back in her original timeline. No one knew anything extraordinary had happened to her and she had no inclination. She fell back into the routine, feeling as though she had forgotten something important… but that just wasn’t logical.
